Abstract: Considerations for Ultrasonic Sensor Selection--The measured object; Mechanical vibration; Attenuation; Misjudgment.
1. The Measured Object
The most ideal objects for detection using an ultrasonic distance sensor are large, flat, high-density ones that are placed vertically facing the sensor's sensing surface. Objects that are more difficult to detect include those with extremely small surface areas, those made of materials that absorb ultrasonic waves (such as plastic foam), or those where the corner of the object faces the sensor. For some objects that are relatively hard to detect, you can first teach the sensor the background surface of the object, and then the sensor will react to the object placed between itself and the background.
When using the sensor for liquid detection, the liquid surface needs to face the ultrasonic distance sensor vertically. If the liquid surface is very uneven or has foam, the sensor's response time should be adjusted to be longer. The sensor will average out these conditions, enabling relatively stable data reading.
2. Mechanical Vibration
Mechanical vibrations, whether from the sensor itself or surrounding machinery, can affect the accuracy of distance measurement. In such cases, appropriate vibration damping measures can be taken. For example, using a rubber anti-vibration device as a base for the sensor can reduce mechanical vibrations, and using a fixed rod can also eliminate or minimize mechanical vibrations to the greatest extent.
3. Attenuation
Ultrasonic distance measuring sensors with temperature compensation can make adjustments when the ambient temperature changes slowly. However, if the temperature fluctuates too quickly, the sensor will not be able to adjust accordingly.
4. Misjudgment
Ultrasonic waves may be reflected by nearby small objects, such as slide rails or fixing jigs. To ensure the reliability of detection, it is necessary to reduce or eliminate the impact of surrounding objects on ultrasonic wave reflection.
